Prong collars are an aversive training tool that, when used correctly, can be an incredibly valuable tool for many handlers in training dogs. Prong collars work similarly to martingale collars- they tighten with leash pressure, apply aversive force, and relax with loose leash, removing any aversive sensation. This allows for a dog to only experience correction when the leash is taught. PLACEMENT: The correct placement of the prong collar is important for safety, control, and appropriate correction. It should never be loose enough to sit low on the dogs neck or slide on/off of their head. The correct placement is high on the dog’s neck, preferably just behind the jaw and ears. In general, a prong collar is most effective when used via corrective leash popping, rather than sustained pulling. The release of pressure is important to teach a dog the correct behavior.
